![]() ![]() Its content isn’t meant to be exhausting.Ĭrystal Chronicles doesn’t try to loop the player into a meaningless grind with the goal of a power fantasy. It exists to let us journey into a mysterious world that can never actually be fully understood by the player, wrapping itself in a shroud of mystery with diary entries and poems narrating your travel. It plays like a tabletop RPG, with mechanics of time moving on and events triggering with the travelling of a map. I immediately found contrast to these standards from the start of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition. ![]() We get massive areas to explore, with a large part of our time playing just moving from one dot to the next. We’re inundated with side quests as checkboxes to fill a map, with the occasional marginal subtext or traumatic fluff to seem meaningful. For this we end up with politics that have been defanged for the sake of morality systems that are conservative or lacking nuance. The blockbuster RPGs of Elder Scrolls, Persona, The Witcher 3 and Square Enix’s own Final Fantasy itself have created a fence, built on the sterilization of their forebears, that has left other RPG developers to follow their design trends in wake of their success. As such, they make great Alchemists. One of my biggest frustrations over the years with RPGs has been their inability to break from design cliches. Yukes are exceptionally rare, only being found as NPCs in their capital city of Shella, but generally value knowledge and magical prowess above all else. When the Lilty empire attacked, it is said that only the Yukes managed to resist them thanks to their magical prowess, and that has hampered the relationship between the two tribes for some time. Finally, the Yuke's defense ability makes them ethereal, completely negating all damage from any direction.Įasily the strangest of the four tribes found in Crystal Chronicles, Yukes are essentially souls bound to a suit of armor. Their equipment also massively boosts their magic stat, making up for the low starting point. ![]() Yukes have the fastest charging and spell casting speed in the game and gain a massive +10 bonus to range on all spells. Despite having the lowest starting values in all three stats (though their magic stat is tied with the Lilties), their boons set them apart from all the other races as the best magic casters in the game and particularly useful to have when playing Crystal Chronicles Remastered online. Aside from thieving, Selkies are generally fishermen and ranchers.Īt first glance, the Yuke's bizarre appearance and lackluster stats are likely to turn players away, but they should not be dismissed so easily. ![]() Because of this tendency, many other races don't trust the Selkie, though the Clavats are known to be the most accepting of them. This isn't the case for all Selkie, but most of the Selkies that players will meet in their playthrough tend to be very aloof or mischievous in some way. Within the lore, Selkies are naturally agile and as such tend to take up lives as hunters or thieves. Finally, their defense button is actually a backflip rather than a guard, which provides a brief moment of invulnerability. They have high magic stats and actually cast at the same speed as the Yukes but lack any sort of range bonus to their spells, making spellcasting a high risk/reward endeavor. Seklie also have the fastest focus attack charge, and will typically play a sort of hit and run style. Though they have the second lowest starting defense in the game, their attack and magic stats are both admirable making them high damage dealers. Selkies are nimble and quick, wielding paddle like weapons against their enemies. ![]()
